period 2 (1898-1930)
During this time period, many major events changed and impacted women and all of America. There were many reform movements that completely changed America during President Wilson's presidency. The 19th amendment was passed so that women were now able to vote after many years of suffragists trying to gain the right to vote. The U.S. also started to expand its role in world affairs leading to imperialism. Imperialism then led to World War 1. The U.S. didn't join the war until 1917. While men were off fighting in the war, women played non-combat roles back in America. They were nurses, telephone operators, typists, and ambulance drivers. Also back in the U.S, Red Cross facilities were set up. After the war, the U.S. was transformed. America became the richest and most developed country in the world. Mass production, high wages, new consumer goods and new forms of entertainment were created which named this decade as the roaring twenties. During the roaring twenties, women changed drastically. Women had an entirely new style called, flappers. They had shorter hair, wore makeup, smoked, drank in speakeasies and wore dresses that appeared luxurious. Women also stayed single longer and had children later in life than what they did before.

New York Times wrote this newspaper April 8, 1917. This newspaper is significant because it talks about Jeanette Rankin, a woman that held a position in congress. This shows how drastically women were changing and the things they were able to do during this time.
