period 1 (1865-1898)
1865-1898 was a time when women had more opportunities beyond marriage, they could could have new urban jobs which gave them a sense of independence. More and more girls were graduating from high school and then attending universities. Many important reformers popped up during this time like jane addams, who led the settlement house movement, Ida Tarbell, a muckraker who exposed monopoly of standard oil, and Florence kelly who helped bring about child and labor laws. Many woman reformers brought awareness to the lack of their rights. Women couldn't vote, own property and they were paid less. In 1848 the first womens rights convention occurred, the seneca falls convention, where they discussed suffrage. in 1890 NAWSA (the national american women suffrage association) was formed which also continued to fight for rights.
